The implications of the results are heavily in favor of the picture superiority effect theory stated in the introduction. The added visual information significantly aided recall of experimental group 1. In relation to the research hypothesis the results support it. The reason behind the results are that the participants of condition 2 had two ways tointerpret the sensory information they were receiving. This amplified their recall ability byapproximately twice based on the results. Meanwhile the group of participants of condition 1 did not have this benefit, subsequently suffering from it in the recall test. This isimportant because the knowledge required from the results could be used to change the teaching material of school programs to focus both on the imagery and linguistic ways of learning.Limitations include certain demand characteristics may have been present as the consent forms stated that memory will be investigated. However, not stating the nature of the investigation would have been unethical. Another limitation included the distraction task which could’ve been too difficult and caused stress amongst participants.Strengths include a strong correlational relationship. It was clear already with one trial, that the addition of pictures aided the participants in recall. This relationship was reinforced because most extraneous variables were controlled for example by ensuring that people did not work together. Biases such as the researcher bias was significantly limited due to the quantitative nature of the data. Another strength is the easy replicability of the experiment.To improve, give simple distraction tasks such as a simple quiz or survey instead of a math test, which could’ve been difficult for some. This would help avoid recital of words from occurring due to lack of focus on the distraction task. To further this study, long term vs short term memory could be looked at to see if visual aids have as big of an impact on different types of memory storage.The results of the experiment are in line with our hypothesis which stated that more words would be recalled when pictures are presented with the words. This is evidence for the picture superiority effect because our results were consistent with this phenomenon.
